The Artist
Gert J. van Maanen
Statement: Contemporary, abstract paintings; some works reflect the state of the Irish land- and seascape. Van Maanen's original use of painting materials, such as dry pigments combined with dripping paint has created a distinct personal style. Colours are clear and austere.

Kontakt, "De overtuigingskracht van Gert J. van Maanen" (Piet Augustijn)
- quotes from newspaper reviews:
Brabants Dagblad, 9/81 Waldy Vastrick:
"A great water colour depicts a bucket with a whitewash brush. One can understand his
development from this, viewed apart, not very original painting. The coloured areas have been
kept broad, the large brush will often be used in his later work".
De Stem, 2/82 Henk Egberts:
"The grant gesture, the powerful brush stroke, the uncomplicated lines, the effective plane and
the direct colour".
Gorkumse Courant Nieuwsblad, 3/82 Piet Augustijn:
"The powerful brush strokes, that are almost a meter wide in some works, must be clearly
readable. The remaining white plains also determine the compositon. Gert J. van Maanen's
approach undoubtedly leads in the direction of a personal metaphorical language, without lapsing
into the commenplace, because his selfcriticism does not allow that".
Stadsblad Breda, 3/82 Katja Lobbe:
"He takes the brush into both hands and puts large strokes on the canvas with his body,
unpromising rhythmics. This technique is effective in sometimes beautiful structures. Runback
and take-off run at the same time, with penetrating fields of tension. Where red without a
calming touch of blue gives the impression of solidified frenzy".
Vrije Volk 10/83 Peter Marijnissen:
"His abstact compositions consist of only one form, often depicted in a few powerfull brush
strokes, mostly in lively grey. Especially the Mandorla form crops up regularly, a plane in the
form of an almond (translation of Mandorla), that was often used in the Middle Ages as an
aureole with an image of Mary within. With Gert J. van Maanen the holy space within stays
empty. The white residual space on the inside and the outside of the almond that is mostly lying
in a horizontal position space also determines the composition. In the best paintings a continual
dialogue develops between form and residual form. The dialogue is even more emphasized by
the expressive and accurate use of materials".
JAC Bunca News, 7/84 published by the International Arts Center of Tokyo Japan:
"The starting point is clearly recognizable; the effect takes place on two canvases in a special
way and which cannot be seen separately".
Pallas, 12/87 Martien van Wijk:
"As a modern artist, Gert J. van Maanen is someone who is seeking to go further and further in
many centuries of art. As a painter of these times, he tries to make something visible, of which
we never new that it existed. He often works with large paintings. The background is white. On
these white planes an enormous action and a well-dosed tension takes place".
Brabants Dagblad, 4/91 Mary Winters:
"Gert J. van Maanen has his own particular position in the long row of abstract-expressionistic
orientated art painters. The sometimes huge seized paintings he prefers to make, require
specialadjustments. Van Maanen designed a swiveling painter's easel and developed his own
method to attach the paper-painted compositions on a linen carrier. To enable him to reveal the
one big painting movement, he connected several brushes to one another".
